How to Check Coolant Levels

Service Tips from MINI of Santa Monica

First off, you may be wondering, “What is coolant?” Coolant is a fluid that regulates the temperature of the engine block and parts by transferring heat. This makes coolant a crucial part of your vehicle, whether you drive a new or used car. It contains additives to ensure it stays below 32 degrees F, but also doesn’t evaporate above 212 degrees F. Learn more about this fluid and when to change it with MINI of Santa Monica.

Coolant: What to Look For

Coolant levels are easy to check – you don’t have to open the radiator cap. Instead, check the markings on the side of the reservoir. You are good to go if the fluid reaches the “full” marking line. If the fluid is low, remove the radiator cap and add the coolant or a 50/50 mix of coolant/water. Make sure you read the bottle to see if it’s premixed. It’s also a good idea to inspect the hoses connected to the radiator for any leaks or damage.

Note: If you’re adding more liquid to the cooling system, be sure the engine has cooled. Also, don’t attempt to open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.

When to See a Service Technician for Coolant Issues

Coolant is normally thicker than water but thinner than oi. If you notice your coolant has developed a sludgy appearance, schedule service ASAP. There’s a good chance your car has an internal gasket leak. While you can still drive your vehicle, a leaking gasket will drain the coolant quickly. This means the engine is at risk of overheating and being severely damaged.

When to Change Your Engine’s Coolant

Coolant levels deplete over time, so it’s a good idea to check up on the cooling system every three to six months. If the liquid changes from its original blue, green, yellow, or red to brownish or even colorless, then it is time to flush the system and replace the fluid.
